We have combined two experiences into one for Sunday May 3rd starting promptly at 10 a.m. We will meet some Master Gardeners from New Jersey at a garden in Chestnut Hill where Jay and Nanie Flaherty will guide us around their property. We’ve been invited to bring our own brown bag lunches (drinks will be provided) and enjoy them on their property before leaving promptly at 12:30 to start the Collins Nursery tour at 1 p.m.

Our one-acre garden in Chestnut Hill sits on the corner of a busy intersection of cars, bicyclists, pedestrians, dogs, and children walking to the adjacent school. Rather than retreat from all this activity to a private sanctuary, we have opened vistas into our garden so that passersby may pause to enjoy what we have planted and to share their ideas with us. The original owners of our property planted over ninety holly trees in the ‘60’s, which now give us bones for our own design of a four-season garden, with hundreds of plants of all varieties, dozens of Japanese maples, water features, bluestone paths bordered by Wissahickon schist, and accents of found objects. We use color combinations, foliage contrast, scent, hardscape, and vertical accents to create seasonal variety and to capture the play of light and shade. Our joy is sharing what we have created.

Collins Nursery in Glenside

Collins Nursery is a small retail nursery specializing in container grown plants that are native to the Mid-Atlantic region. The nursery stocks native trees, shrubs, vines, flowering perennials for sun and shade, ferns, grasses, and groundcovers. Offerings vary throughout the year and include native woodland wildflowers, spring ephemerals, plants for rain gardens, and deciduous azaleas. Many of the plants are propagated from locally collected seed and the majority are straight species making them suitable for both home gardens and restoration projects. Unique hypertufa planters and birdbaths and original botanical artwork are also available.
