"Honey, I Shrunk the Lawn: Ecological Stewardship of Residential Property" - A Virtual Event

Speaker: PSE Master Gardener Sharon Richardson

We have changed the time for this event from a morning 10 AM start to an evening start of 7 PM.

Americans spend about $29 BILLION a year on their lawns. "Every square foot dedicated to lawn is a square foot that is degrading local ecosystems". (Doug Tallamy). Watering and mowing have made grass one of America's most expensive, labor intensive and environmentally devastating crops, while leaving behind a desert for our pollinators, other wildlife and plants. Maintaining lawns often requires the extensive use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides to kill weeds. Because of extensive stormwater issues caused by lawns, these and other pollutants enter our streams and ground water. Join us to learn how you can reduce pollution to our water, invite pollinators, and convert unused areas of your lawn to a more visually appealing, diverse and sustainable landscape....AND YOU'LL SAVE TIME AND MONEY.

Sharon Richardson is a lifelong learner and retired school superintendent. She did not discover the world of gardening until she became a volunteer at Longwood gardens. She has earned certificates in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design from Longwood Gardens. Through the years she has had many roles and lead many teams at Longwood. She became a PA Master Gardener in 2011 and a Pa Master Naturalist in 2018. She belongs to many plant societies and volunteers for most of them.
