Donald Pell will lead us on a private tour of his award-winning naturalistic gardens.
Since 2008, Donald has been converting this fourteen-acre farm into a lush landscape of naturalistic gardens in the New American style. The farmhouse, the Oval, and the woodland gardens focus on exploring the beauty of plants in defined spaces that create an experience of place.
Gravel pathways surrounding a historic stone farmhouse lead visitors through tall blocks of grasses and forbs*, providing an intimate reaction to unique plants and novel combinations as they arrive at the rear natural-stone patio with sweeping views south. Here, viewers overlook the Oval, where large-scale perennial plantings are laid out in block and intermingled compositions to mimic natural habitats while showcasing form, texture, and color. Monolithic slab steps lead toward the grand American pecan tree that is the centerpiece of the woodland garden.

*   Note from the Editor: I had to look up “forb” in the dictionary. For anyone else who may not know, a forb is “any herbaceous plant that is not a grass.” I learned something today!
