"Come to Helen’s late spring garden. You ca n come expecting to see lots of allium, hostas, iris, sweet woodruff, sprin g ephemerals on a northern sloped garden on 3/4’s acre. The spring snowflak es Leucojum aestivum may be fading but the sundrops and celandine poppy wil l be having a field day.
As you come up the driveway note the yews which have been limbed up to sho w the sculptural interest of the trunks. Under the canopy is a spring bulb collection of trout lilies and muscari that morph into a hosta patch with p eripheral small plantings. This is a favorite salad bar for the deer that a re endemic to the area, hence, the low fences. On the east side of the driv e are Canadian burnet (Sanguisorba), iris and white alliums, mostly Mount E verest, and Japanese fern.
In the fenced part of the back yard, a pool sits surrounded by grand Edith Bogue magnoli as, hydrangea, variegated hostas as well as bluish hosta Elegans, daylilies , Japanese anemone, ironweed, lilies, camassia and sedum Autumn Joy.
As you return to the western s
ide of the house you will pass an emerging early summer garden dotted with
sundrops, nepeta, poppies and a hedge of hydrangea and magnolia sieboldi. <
/strong>Note the yellow or orange specimen rhododendrum.
p> The front garden fills with peonie
s, yarrow and Husker’s Red penstemon in the sunny area and acanthus in the
shade. Tradescantia and aquilegia add pops of color. The fringe tree should
be in full bloom in early May.
There are abundant sensory treats throughout the garden which conti
nues to evolve through 35 years of tending. I look forward to sharing this with you." ***************************************
