The All-Season Flower Garden: Adapting English Methods to the Mid-Atlantic Climate –
at Hedgleigh Spring with Charles Cresson

We’ve all heard inspiring lectures explaining how the lush succession of bloom from spring to fall is achieved in famous English gardens. But how can these methods be adapted to our home gardens in the hotter Mid-Atlantic climate? Join Charles Cresson for an on-site and in-depth discussion about how to plan, organize and manage seasonal plants that perform and provide a succession of bloom in our climate. Gain insights to combine color, texture and plant form.

Charles Cresson studied and trained in England, including the grand flower borders of the Broad Walk at Wisley Garden. He has since maintained the flower borders at Hedgleigh Spring for over 45 years, as well as flower gardens in several public gardens. Learning through trial and error, he has experimented with hundreds of varieties of perennials, annuals, biennials and bulbs. His gardens have not remained static but have evolved over time. He is the author of Charles Cresson on The American Flower Garden, available online from 2nd hand booksellers. In 2023, Charles was honored as the first recipient of the “Jim Bobb Memorial Award,” an award created to recognize members whose outstanding contributions and long-term service have significantly enriched and expanded HPS/MAG.
