Native Plants Special Interest Group Event: A Visit to Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve

Join us for a gentle walk around Shenk’s Preserve to observe one of the best sites for naturally occurring spring ephemeral wildflowers, along the stunning palisades of the Susquehanna River. Shenks Ferry is renowned for its display of wildflowers, especially of spring ephemeral species. Wildflowers such as spring beauties, Virginia waterleaf, woodland phlox, wild geranium, and a host of other species throughout the season carpet the forested floor. Over 50 birds including owls, hawks, indigo bunting, and the pileated woodpecker, our largest woodpecker, are common visitors to the preserve.

We will meet up at the Exton Main Street Mall at 9 AM to carpool. Meet in front of the Michaels Store at 285 Main Street. Once we have consolidated into as few cars as possible, we will drive the hour plus journey to the Preserve. If you drive separately, please meet up in the parking lot at 10:15 AM at 857 Green Hill Road S, Conestoga PA. Parking is very limited on site and if full, you will need to drive back up the road and walk down.

As we are walking on trails, please wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. Hiking poles can help with uneven terrain. Bring rain gear, a warm layer, hat, sunscreen, bug juice, and a daypack for water, snacks, etc.

We will plan to go rain or shine, so bring rain gear or an umbrella. The trip will be cancelled if conditions are dire.

During spring wildflower season only, a porta potty is available near the parking lot.
